What problems do steel suppliers have?

Some of the biggest problems are:

Environmental impact: Steel production is an intensive energy-consuming process and generates significant emissions, including greenhouse gases and pollutants. To achieve the SDGs, these emissions must be reduced and environmental damage minimized.

Energy consumption: Steel production requires large amounts of energy, often from non-renewable sources. Transition to renewable energy sources is very expensive.

Sourcing of raw materials: Securing sustainable sources of raw materials, such as iron ore and coal, can be difficult. Ensuring responsible mining practices and reducing the environmental impact of extraction are crucial to achieving the SDGs.

Waste management: Steel production generates various forms of waste, including slag and emissions. Implementing effective waste management strategies, such as recycling and reuse, is essential for minimizing environmental impact.

Water consumption: Steel production consumes significant amounts of water for cooling and other processes. Responsible water consumption and minimizing water pollution are essential for achieving the SDGs related to clean water and sanitation.

Social Responsibility: Ensuring fair labor practices, promoting worker safety and supporting local communities are important aspects of achieving SDGs related to social sustainability.

Supply chain transparency: Maintaining transparency throughout the supply chain, including tracing the origin of raw materials and ensuring ethical sourcing practices, is crucial to achieving the SDGs related to responsible consumption and production.

Addressing these challenges will require collaboration among steel suppliers, policymakers and other stakeholders to develop and implement sustainable practices across the industry.

What does the Green Steel Initiative do?

This initiative was specially developed by EBC Capital and was created through close collaboration with buying and selling parties in the steel industry. EBC Capital mediates in trade transactions in which sourcing plays an important role. In the agreements, part of the turnover is directly converted into solutions that make an immediate impact.

How does this initiative work in concrete terms?

After completing the transaction, capital is reserved to directly contribute to the charities defined by EBC Capital. By actively participating in charities or projects that contribute to the objectives in those countries where the transaction takes place.

What do we achieve with this initiative and how do we help the steel industry?

Government support and incentives:

Steel suppliers typically have supportive policies and governments offer incentives as incentives to ease the transition to greener production methods. These could include tax schemes, subsidies for, for example, the introduction of renewable energy and financing for research and development of cleaner technologies.
